Tired Of Cleaning Your Retail Business Yourself Each Night? What Are Your Options?

Posted on: 27 August 2017

Launching your own retail business can require you to wear many hats: entrepreneur, financier, shipping and logistics coordinator, and sometimes even janitor. If you haven't yet hired a janitor for your business or are unsure where to begin, you may still be doing most of the cleaning work yourself, perhaps with the assistance of your spouse, child, or other "off the books" family member. While this can be enough to get you through on a short-term basis, over the long haul, you'll want to make more permanent arrangements. Read on to learn more about the choices you have if you'd like to leave your short-lived janitorial career behind you.

Staff Janitor

Adding a janitorial position to your current staff can make sense if your retail store will require heavy-duty cleaning on a regular basis. Few businesses will need 40 hours or more per week of cleaning services, but many employ janitors as part-time staff members who aren't eligible for the same benefits as full-time employees.

This arrangement can provide you with a "captive" janitor who will work on the schedule and under the terms and conditions assigned by you as the business owner. This arrangement can give you the most control over the way the work is performed and when it is performed.

"Overtime" Janitor

In some cases, contracting with a current employee to perform these janitorial duties above and beyond the scope of their normal employment can be a win-win arrangement. In this type of situation, you'll provide a separate hourly pay rate for time spent cleaning; your employee can earn a bit of extra money, you'll ensure that your business is clean and tidy, and you won't have to go through the hassle and expense of adding another person to your payroll.

However, losing this staff member could require you to replace two positions, rather than just one, and offering this job to only one person could lead to resentment or hard feelings among other members of your staff.

Janitor Service

Most smaller retail businesses don't have the cleaning needs or the extra revenue to justify salary and benefits for a full-time janitor. For these businesses, using a janitorial service can be the most cost-effective option. Janitorial companies will perform a top-to-bottom cleaning of your business each night (or as often as you'd like to schedule their services), performing tasks like vacuuming, emptying trash, dusting, and other jobs you might tend to overlook.

Teaching Your Kids To Clean Properly

If you were to tell your kids to clean your entire house top to bottom, how well would they be able to handle the job? Sometimes, even kids that are old enough to haul the vacuum upstairs can struggle to do the job effectively, which is why it is so important to focus on technique from an early age. I started thinking carefully about cleaning methods a few months ago, and it was really interesting to see how much of a difference my efforts made. Within a few months, my kids really mastered crucial concepts, and I was really pleased with the progress. Check out this blog for more information.
