How To Clean Vinyl Venetian Blinds

Posted on: 30 August 2017

Vinyl Venetian blinds  provide an effective means of controlling light in a room. As opposed to curtains, blinds allow you to replace slats instead of the entire curtain.

However, Venetian blinds also collect dust easily regardless of the material, which means they need regular cleaning. It is challenging to clean these blinds, but not impossible. Clean your Venetian blinds by following these tips.

Prepare to Clean the Blinds

To clean the blinds, gather:

  • step-ladder
  • large blankets or towels
  • bucket
  • liquid dish soap
  • white vinegar (optional)
  • sponge
  • clothes dryer sheets or old socks
  • hose or bathtub

Blinds can be left in place to clean, cleaned in  a tub, or taken outside. Set a step-ladder to reach the blinds, if needed. To remove the blinds, twist the wand until the slats are completely open, and tug on the cord to roll them up the window. Detach the tabs at the end of the blinds, and  tilt the upper bar to release the blinds

Give them a Light Cleaning

For regular, light cleaning, you may leave the blinds hanging, but tie back curtains. Close the blinds, and place a damp sock on one hand and a dry sock on the other.

Wipe each slat with the wet sock starting at the top middle moving to the outer edges, to prevent spreading dust across the slat. Dry them using the other sock. Open the blinds, shut them thither way, and repeat on the other side. Alternately, clean them with clothes dryer sheet in the same manner.

To vacuum, close the blinds, and connect the soft duster attachment to the vacuum to avoid scratching the blinds surface. keep one hand on the blinds, and vacuum working from the center, left, to right.Open the blinds, and vacuum the other side.

Do a Deep Cleaning

Take the blinds outside, and lay them on a blanket, tarp or towel with the slats closed. Mix a quarter cup of dish detergent and warm water in the bucket, and pour the mixture on the blinds. Use a sponge or scrub brush to clean the slats, clean the other side, rinse with a hose, and let them dry. If the weather is cool, dab the water with a towel.

Alternately, fill the bathtub with enough warm water to cover the blinds. Add several drops of dish soap or a half-gallon of white distilled vinegar to the water, swirl the water with your hands, and let the blinds soak for thirty minutes. .Drain the dirty water, fill the tub with clean water to rinse the blind, then clean the tub.

Teaching Your Kids To Clean Properly

If you were to tell your kids to clean your entire house top to bottom, how well would they be able to handle the job? Sometimes, even kids that are old enough to haul the vacuum upstairs can struggle to do the job effectively, which is why it is so important to focus on technique from an early age. I started thinking carefully about cleaning methods a few months ago, and it was really interesting to see how much of a difference my efforts made. Within a few months, my kids really mastered crucial concepts, and I was really pleased with the progress. Check out this blog for more information.
