Tips For Cleaning Your Tile And Grout

Posted on: 7 September 2017

If you have grout and tile in your home that is a few years old, then you likely have a build up on it that has caused it to become discolored. This takes away from the beauty of your flooring and is likely something that you want to clean and otherwise fix. Thankfully, when it comes to cleaning your grout and tile, there are certain things that you can do to not only speed up the process, but make the cleaning as effective as possible. This article will discuss some tips for cleaning your tile and grout.

Use A Toothbrush And Melamine Foam

One of the hardest things about cleaning your tile and grout is trying to remove all of the dirt, marks, spill stains, etc, from the small crevices in both the tile and the grout. It is these things that generally aren't removed when you do a regular mopping of your floors, thus causing them to build up until they are very apparent. For example, you may go from having a white grout and a light gray tile, to a dark grout and a dark gray tile. Thankfully, there are a couple different tools that can come in handy when trying to remove these things. The first tool to use is a toothbrush. The small bristles on the toothbrush allow you to get into those small pockets, cracks, and crevices. The head of the toothbrush is also small enough to fit perfectly into the grout lines as well, making it perfect. If you use a good cleaner in tandem with the toothbrush, then you are likely going to see even better results.

The melamine foam is an abrasive foam that is the perfect tool for getting the build up off of your tile. The larger size of the eraser allows you to clean more surface area at one time, thus effectively speeding up the process for you. Since you likely have a lot of surface area to cover, you probably don't want to clean each tile entirely with a toothbrush. In terms of using a cleaner with the foam, it can be helpful at times, but it definitely isn't something that is necessary for success.

First Vinegar, Then Bleach

When you are looking at household cleaners to use for cleaning your tile, you should consider vinegar and bleach. Vinegar is great for removing most stains, so try this out first. However, if you find that it isn't working for you, then you will want to move onto bleach. Bleach is a bit stronger and can remove the tougher stains. Just keep in mind that the area should be well ventilated when using either cleaner.

Teaching Your Kids To Clean Properly

If you were to tell your kids to clean your entire house top to bottom, how well would they be able to handle the job? Sometimes, even kids that are old enough to haul the vacuum upstairs can struggle to do the job effectively, which is why it is so important to focus on technique from an early age. I started thinking carefully about cleaning methods a few months ago, and it was really interesting to see how much of a difference my efforts made. Within a few months, my kids really mastered crucial concepts, and I was really pleased with the progress. Check out this blog for more information.
