The Three Big Steps For Cleaning Up After A Construction Project

Posted on: 25 March 2018

If you just had part of your home remodeled, before you start using that part of your home, you need to clean it up. With construction projects, there are multiple steps to the clean-up process. You are going to want to get rid of the construction equipment and waste, complete a general cleaning, and then do a detailed cleaning.

Get Rid of Construction Equipment and Waste

The first thing that needs to happen is all of the construction equipment needs to be removed. That means putting away the hammers and drills, and getting rid of the air compressor and the shop vacuum.

Next, you need to get rid of the waste from the construction project. You need to put the lids back on any leftover paint and stains, and store them in a cool place. You need to throw away all of the packaging that came with the items that were used to fix up your home.

Also, throw away any leftover scraps, like broken pieces of wood and vinyl that was not used.

Complete A General Cleaning

Once all of the construction equipment, waste and supplies are out of the way, you need to do a general construction cleaning. With a general cleaning, start by sweeping, vacuuming or mopping up the floors. Wipe down all the countertops and cupboards. Wipe down the outside of the walls to get rid of dust. Focus on the big picture cleaning that you would normally do in your home.

Do A Detailed Clean

Once the floor is clean, surfaces have been wiped down, and the area has been dusted, you want to do some detailed cleaning. Open up the windows and clean the frames and the window screens. Be sure to clean off the top of the window frames.

Take down and clean any light fixtures that were left in place to get rid of dust that may have settled on them. If there are tall cabinets or furniture in the room, clean the tops of those off. Construction dust can literally settle everywhere.

Open up any cupboards or vents, and clean them as well. During construction, dust can get into the tiniest of spaces, so make sure that you clean all the little spaces in the remolded room.

Once you are done with the detailed cleaning, clean the floors again to pick up any dust that was dislodged from your detailed cleaning. Then you are ready to move back in and start to use the area of your home that was remodeled.

Teaching Your Kids To Clean Properly

If you were to tell your kids to clean your entire house top to bottom, how well would they be able to handle the job? Sometimes, even kids that are old enough to haul the vacuum upstairs can struggle to do the job effectively, which is why it is so important to focus on technique from an early age. I started thinking carefully about cleaning methods a few months ago, and it was really interesting to see how much of a difference my efforts made. Within a few months, my kids really mastered crucial concepts, and I was really pleased with the progress. Check out this blog for more information.
