Getting Your House Ready For Spring

Posted on: 9 April 2018

Spring cleaning season is here, and it doesn't have to be limited just to the inside of the house. Take spring cleaning outside and get ready for the warmer seasons while enjoying the fresh air after a long winter spent indoors. Read on for some tasks to add to your spring cleaning to-do list.

Power-Washing

Give the outside of your home a good washing to get rid of the dirt and grime that can accumulate over the winter months. You can rent a powerwasher or hire a residential power washing company to do the dirty work for you. The best part of the second option is that you get to spend your weekend having fun instead of washing the house. After the power washing is done, look for spots on your house where paint has flaked off. If there are bare spots, plan on doing a little painting this spring. If wood is exposed, it can rot, and that can lead to some costly repairs down the road.

Lawn Care

Give your yard a good raking to get rid of the dead grass and debris that can prevent proper lawn growth. If you have a major weed problem, spring is the time to tackle it. It's also the time to give your lawn a good feeding. As the lawn starts to get green, if you notice a few dead spots, don't panic. This is the perfect opportunity to spread some new grass seed.

Flower Beds

In the spring, grab a rake or get on your hands and knees to remove any errant leaves that didn't get picked up during the fall clean-up and pick up any branches that fell during those fierce winter storms. Once the ground is no longer frozen, turn over all the dirt so that the soil is loose enough to accommodate new root growth. After you turn over the soil, work some compost into the ground to feed your plants throughout the growing season.

Gutters and Roof

Spring is a good time of year to tackle the task of cleaning gutters. Make sure to remove any debris that may have gathered in them since their last cleaning, and run your hose through the downspout to clear it out to help ensure your house is ready for all those spring rains. While you're up there, take a look at your roof. Look for curling shingles, missing shingles, and rusted flashing.

Teaching Your Kids To Clean Properly

If you were to tell your kids to clean your entire house top to bottom, how well would they be able to handle the job? Sometimes, even kids that are old enough to haul the vacuum upstairs can struggle to do the job effectively, which is why it is so important to focus on technique from an early age. I started thinking carefully about cleaning methods a few months ago, and it was really interesting to see how much of a difference my efforts made. Within a few months, my kids really mastered crucial concepts, and I was really pleased with the progress. Check out this blog for more information.
