Tips For Deep Cleaning Your Home Before Decorating For The Holidays

Posted on: 17 November 2018

If you are hosting a holiday party and want to deep clean your home before putting up your seasonal decorations, then these tips will help you accomplish the task.

Tip: Dust Everything Up High with a Cobweb Dusting Tool

The most effective way to clean your home is to start with the ceiling and work your way downward. Starting at the ceiling and moving down towards the floor ensures that areas you have already cleaned won't become dirty again as you keep cleaning.

To clean the cobwebs off of the ceilings and the dust from the curtain rods, use a cobweb dusting tool. If you don't have one, they are available where you buy brooms and are wonderful tools for dusting and removing cobwebs that are in otherwise inaccessible places.

Tip: Clean Your Window Treatments

Even if you keep a clean home and vacuum regularly, chances are you give a lot more attention to cleaning your floors than your window coverings. However, window coverings are magnets for dust and can get just as dirty as your carpet.

If your home has mini-blinds, then they can be removed and washed outdoors or in your bathtub.

If your home has washable curtains, then you should wash them in your washing machine with a mild laundry detergent. Use the delicate cycle to ensure they aren't damaged.

If your home has formal drapes that require professional cleaning, then you have two different choices:

  1. take the drapes to your local dry cleaners
  2. have the drapes professionally cleaned in your home

Since taking down and putting back up heavy draperies is a challenge for most homeowners, opting to have your draperies cleaned as they hang in place by a curtain cleaning service is a great option.

Tip: Wipe Down All Solid Surfaces

After you have cleaned up high and have removed the dusty window coverings, allow the dust to settle for a bit and then wipe down all of the solid surfaces and anything sitting on them. If you have items sitting on shelves or tables, remove them, wipe everything down, and then place things back where you want them to be.

Tip: Clean the Baseboards, Sweep, and Vacuum

To finish deep cleaning so you can decorate for the holiday party, run a broom or your cobweb dusting tool along all of the baseboards to remove any dust. Finally, sweep or vacuum all of the floors in your house to remove all of the dust and dirt that has fallen as you cleaned up higher.

Teaching Your Kids To Clean Properly

If you were to tell your kids to clean your entire house top to bottom, how well would they be able to handle the job? Sometimes, even kids that are old enough to haul the vacuum upstairs can struggle to do the job effectively, which is why it is so important to focus on technique from an early age. I started thinking carefully about cleaning methods a few months ago, and it was really interesting to see how much of a difference my efforts made. Within a few months, my kids really mastered crucial concepts, and I was really pleased with the progress. Check out this blog for more information.
