Removing Mold And Mildew From Your Home: What You Should Know

Posted on: 1 April 2019

Mold in your home can be deadly, especially if it's black mold. You may find this type of mold if you have had water damage. Some people may not even know that they have mold, as it may be in an attic or basement, or behind the walls. If you have black spots on your walls or ceiling, or you notice darkened spots anywhere in your home, it may be black mold or some other form of mold or mildew. Have your home inspected to be sure it isn't black mold, and read on for more information about mold and how to remove it.

Why Is Mold Harmful?

Mold is harmful to your health, especially to little ones and the elderly. It can also be harmful to anyone that has breathing problems, and to even someone that is normally perfectly healthy. This is because breathing in mold spores can then cause the mold to grow inside the body on the lungs, making breathing difficult with time. You may notice flu-like symptoms often, or have increasing asthma attacks or allergy flareups. If black mold is not treated properly, it can eventually cause death.

How Is Mold Treated?

You should always have mold inspected by a professional remediation company. This way you'll know for sure what type of mold you actually have growing in your home so you can have it treated properly. Before the mold is cleaned up, it's important to find out what caused the mold in the first place to prevent it from returning. If it's caused by ventilation problems or lack of insulation in the home, this needs to be repaired. If it is caused by a water leak from seepage or from a roofing leak, this also needs to be repaired. Finding the cause is key, but so is making sure that more than the surface mold is cleaned and treated.

A professional will look behind walls, in attics, and in basements/crawl spaces to be sure the mold is cleaned and treated to prevent it from returning. If drywall or even subfloors/beams and other parts of the home need to be replaced, this will also be done.

Mold in any form can be dangerous over time, but black mold is especially dangerous. Don't try to remove mold from your home on your own without first having it inspected to be sure it isn't black mold. If you have a big mold issues, you should definitely leave it to a company that offers mold testing services to clean up and prevent the return of the mold in your home.

Teaching Your Kids To Clean Properly

If you were to tell your kids to clean your entire house top to bottom, how well would they be able to handle the job? Sometimes, even kids that are old enough to haul the vacuum upstairs can struggle to do the job effectively, which is why it is so important to focus on technique from an early age. I started thinking carefully about cleaning methods a few months ago, and it was really interesting to see how much of a difference my efforts made. Within a few months, my kids really mastered crucial concepts, and I was really pleased with the progress. Check out this blog for more information.
