Tips to Help You Clean Your Concrete Surface

Posted on: 23 August 2021

The concrete on your property gets put to good use and wear and tear with regular traffic, heavy loads, and a showering of various debris and fluids that can stain and mar its appearance. When concrete stains show up from vehicles, organic debris, or moisture staining, you can clean your concrete as a DIY or with professional services. Here are some recommendations to help you get and keep your concrete pavement clean and new looking for years.

Inspect Your Concrete

The way you routinely check your concrete for stains and damage can make a big effect on your concrete's appearance over the long run. So, regularly sweep and check the integrity and surface of your concrete to look for any problems or damage. After you mow your lawn or do yard work each week, take some time to sweep off dirt and debris along with any grass clippings and leaves, and also pull up any weed growth around the edges or in cracks. Weed growth can make a small crack larger and more serious so remove any growth promptly.

When you regularly sweep your concrete, you will see when stain damage occurs so you can clean it off. Older stains that you leave on your concrete will seep into the concrete's pores and will be more difficult to remove, so be proactive to remove them regularly. And when you clean off leaves and other organic debris, they will be less likely to leave stains upon your concrete surface.

Clean Off Stains

Recognizing a stain on your concrete early on is important for removing it from the concrete. And also when you know what has caused the stain, you can use the right cleaner to remove it.  If you see a vehicle fluid stain on your driveway, you can use the appropriate degreaser cleaning solution to lift the oily stain and rinse it clean. If you see a vehicle fluid stain on your driveway, you can use the appropriate degreaser cleaning solution to lift the oily stain and rinse it clean. Or, if mold and mildew are staining your concrete, you can use a cleaner containing bleach to remove it from the surface.

Apply a stain cleaner to your concrete and use a scrubber to work the cleaning agent into the concrete pores to lift up the debris. A long-handled scrub brush is a good option to help you clean up. Just be sure to avoid metal wire brushes because the metal can become stuck in the concrete and will cause more staining when the metal rusts. If you are using a bleach cleaner, be careful to apply it when there is any vegetation surrounding the concrete's edges, as the bleach will kill your plants. Or you can use an oxygen bleach solution to clean concrete without harming your vegetation.

Teaching Your Kids To Clean Properly

If you were to tell your kids to clean your entire house top to bottom, how well would they be able to handle the job? Sometimes, even kids that are old enough to haul the vacuum upstairs can struggle to do the job effectively, which is why it is so important to focus on technique from an early age. I started thinking carefully about cleaning methods a few months ago, and it was really interesting to see how much of a difference my efforts made. Within a few months, my kids really mastered crucial concepts, and I was really pleased with the progress. Check out this blog for more information.
